The Customer
ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB) operates in over 100 countries with over 120,000 employees worldwide with revenues in 2008 over US $34B. ABB is a leading power and automation engineering company that provides solutions for secure, energy-efficient generation, transmission and distribution of electricity.
ABB utilizes over 500 different Lotus Notes applications with 10,000 users. The key applications used by ABB include Procurement, Quality and Human Resources applications, all critical to their business.
The Challenge
ABB used significant IT overhead to manually export Notes data from the applications to spreadsheets to create the reports for its users. This meant utilizing manual effort to ensure the integrity of the data. Further, the export process created security overhead, as multiple spreadsheets needed to be created to replicate Notes ACL definitions. Because the data was not readily available, nor secure, and involved a massive manual effort, there were delays in the decision-making process, which also delayed critical business decisions and introduced security vulnerabilities.
