IntelliVIEW - an enterprise wide reporting solution
How do you get timely information? GET EMPOWERED!
-James F. Koopmann (Database Expert), 17 Jan 2005
It does not matter if you are a top executive (user of information) or a developer (providing of information) within an enterprise. The problem is the same. Users of information have no viable method to query and generate reports in a timely manner and thus must lean heavily on the producers of information, the IT staff.
It is true we all wish to give people what they need to do their jobs effectively but by the sheer nature of how enterprises work, the divisional lines, and the time constraints we are all under dictate the overwhelming backlog of information requested. We have learned to either do without, wait, or deal with imperfect information. The issues of information delivery and report generation by all but archaic methods typically have most if not all of the following issues associated with them.
Traditional information delivery concerns
- End users rely on IT to develop reports
- End users rely on IT to tell them where the data resides
- End users typically do not share information across divisions
- End users have their own set of tools and methodologies
- End users are typically not sophisticated query technicians
- End users are not analysts or statisticians
- End users' queries are typically inefficient
- End users are hard to explain data models to
- End users build their own data silos
- End users' interfaces require technicians to install
- End users become impatient
- It becomes backlogged with requests
- Data becomes out dated and true information is not realized
If you notice, this list is heavy on the end users' side as being the problem area. It is not that they are doing anything wrong but are just strapped by the inability of IT to keep up with their requests or them to do anything about it. After all, the typical end user is not a high power user that can search and figure out the data they need. The solution then becomes to lessen the load of the IT staff and empower the end user with a tool that is able to assist them in getting to the data they require. When choosing a reporting platform we should try and make positives out of the above list but also realize the upside to the company that should be achieved through a streamlined information delivery mechanism.
Why we need to streamline information delivery
- Time sensitive information becomes usable
- Decision making is improved
- Potential market advantage must be maintained
- Data and toolset becomes shared
- Data security becomes possible
- Reduction in cost is realized
- Knowledge is gained of the corporate model
- Customer relations are improved
